USA : MEMPHIS - October 2008

Go Shop

A. SCHWAB DRY GOODS STORE
( 163 Beale St. Tel. 901-523-9782 )
The downstairs of A. Schwab is a hodgepodge of classic Memphis goodies— Elvis memorabilia and voodoo-themed tchotchkes—while the upstairs is stocked with vintage cash registers, antique signs and other wonderful relics.
TEAR IT UP
( 895 S Cooper St. Tel. 901-276-1930 )
www.tearitupmemphis.com Want to look like a punk, rockabilly star or roller girl this Halloween? A playful “rock ‘n’ roll boutique,” Tear It Up sells excellent threads for countercultural sorts—or those who just wish they were.
YARBROUGH’S MUSIC
( 6122 Macon Rd. Tel. 901-761-0414 )
www.yarbroughsmusic.com With banjos, mandolins, violins and fiddles alongside the standard Fenders, Yarbrough’s Music is heaven for a certain type of folkie. Visit Tuesday nights for the in-store bluegrass jam.

Go See

GRACELAND
( 3765 Elvis Presley Blvd. Tel. 800-238-2000 )
www.elvis.com More than a house, Graceland is a local empire. Check into an Elvis-themed suite at Heartbreak Hotel, climb aboard The King’s customized airplane, examine his 56 spangled jumpsuits, and save time for a fried peanut butter-and-banana sandwich.
THE ART MUSEUM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS
( 3750 Norriswood Ave. Tel. 901-678-2224 )
www.amum.org This recently renovated university museum displays challenging student artwork as well as the school’s unusual holdings of Egyptian artifacts.
THE MAIZE AT AGRICENTER INTERNATIONAL
( 7777 Walnut Grove Rd. Tel. 901-870-6338 )
www.cornfieldmaze.com Haunted hayrides, pumpkin patches and a new-and-improved “corn cannon” are just some of the attractions you’ll find alongside this classic corn maze. Just don’t get caught in the labyrinth on a weekend after dusk—that’s when the goblins come out.

Go Eat

FOLK’S FOLLY PRIME STEAK HOUSE
( 551 S Mendenhall Rd. Tel. 901-762-8200 )
www.folksfolly.com Folk’s Folly is a fine restaurant, butcher shop and piano bar all in one. It’s not cheap, but it has best the Porterhouse steak and spinach casserole in town. $$$
GLASS ONION
( 903 S Cooper St. Tel. 901-274-5151 )
Glass Onion is a bar with a restaurant menu, offering much more eclectic fare than the typical pub grub. You’d think it’s an unassuming place—until you find Gouda in your shrimp and grits. $$
THE ARCADE RESTAURANT
( 540 S Main St. Tel. 901-526-5757 )
www.arcaderestaurant.com The menu at Memphis’ oldest café probably hasn’t changed much in the last 80-odd years. It still serves delicious diner food—ham-and-cheese sandwiches, Greek salads, pepperoni pizza—as well as hearty, traditional breakfasts. $

Go Party

KING’S PALACE CAFÉ
( 162 Beale St. Tel. 901-521-5887 )
www.kingspalacecafe.com With Cajun food, strong drinks and even stronger music, King’s Palace on Beale Street is the perfect place to hear jazz on a sultry night.
YOUNG AVENUE DELI
( 2119 Young Ave. Tel. 901-278-0034 )
www.youngavenuedeli.com The term “gastropub” is a bit too hifalutin’ to really apply here, but Young Avenue Deli does boast an impressive menu (try the muffuletta), as well as dozens of beers. If you’re interested in more traditional pub grub, try the fries: They were named best in America by USA Today.

Go Day-Tripping

HARPETH RIVER STATE PARK
( 190 miles northeast of Memphis In Kingston Springs, TN. Tel. 615-952-2099 )
Just west of Nashville, Harpeth River State Park is a fine place to spend an autumn day kayaking, canoeing and eating sandwiches on the pebbly banks. Bring your own picnic supplies, and rent the rest at the river.

Fun Fact!

The nation’s first labor union for musicians was founded in Memphis in 1873.
