HALLOWEEN

FRIGHT SIGHTS

The past is still very much alive at these haunted spots.

RMS QUEEN MARY
Long Beach, CA (25 MILES FROM LOS ANGELES)
This luxury cruise ship’s heyday was in the 1930s, and the ghostly women that are spotted around the pool today sport bathing suits from the same era. Although ghosts have been seen and heard laughing all around the ship, reports of wet footprints and splashing make the pool the ship’s haunted center. www.queenmary.com

CASABLANCA INN ON THE BAY
St. Augustine, FL(40 MILES FROM JACKSONVILLE)
The self-proclaimed oldest city in the country is bound to have a few ghosts roaming its streets. One such lingering spirit, The Lady with the Lantern, can be found at this B&B, which she formerly owned. The story is that, after falling in love with a rum runner, she would climb to the roof of the house and wave a lantern to warn other bootleggers if the police or Coast Guard were nearby. Her lantern is often still spotted. www.casablancainn.com

HAWTHORNE HOTEL
Salem, MA (25 MILES FROM BOSTON)
Bridget Bishop, the first woman executed during Salem’s 17th-century witch trials, once had an apple orchard where the hotel now stands. Guests have reported smelling apples, while others have seen flickering lights and felt a weight pressing on them in bed. www.hawthornehotel.com

THE STANLEY HOTEL
Estes Park, CO (71 MILES FROM DENVER)
Stephen King wrote The Shining after a stay in room 217. He and his wife returned to their room one night and found their clothing had been put away. Other spooky occurrences include hearing children playing in the hall, phantom music and laughter, and feeling cold spots. www.stanleyhotel.com

MOSS BEACH DISTILLERY
Moss Beach, CA (23 MILES FROM SAN FRANCISCO)
In the 1930s, a married woman, now known as “The Blue Lady,” fell in love with another man at this restaurant. She drove here often to see her paramour, and on one such trip, was killed in a car accident. Since then, she has played small pranks, like taking earrings from guests. Children have seen her, too. www.mossbeachdistillery.com
