LET’S BE FRANC
IT CAN BE TOUGH being the parent of a celebrity: Your child is younger, fresher—and gets all the attention. Just ask cabernet franc, the parent of the more-celebrated cabernet sauvignon. This often-overlooked gem is typically used as a blending grape in other wines such as bordeaux, but lately, it’s been earning its own place in the spotlight. Although similar to its sauvignon offspring, cabernet franc has less tannins and ripens earlier, which makes it worthy of consideration. Because it takes less time to mature, cooler climates are jumping on the cabernet franc bandwagon, including wineries in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and northern California.
