From sparkling metallics to the return of bold lips, fall runways are all about artful beauty— but it takes expert know-how to prep a look for the catwalk. Here, a few of the fashion industry’s top makeup artists spill some of their hottest tips.

“For a fuller pout, start by exfoliating the surface of your lips with a toothbrush. Then, line just outside the natural lip line and fill it in with your favorite lipstick. Finish with a dab of pearlized gloss in the center of the lower lip for added vavoom. To create the perfect cupid’s bow, apply a shimmery eye shadow very subtly just over the top lip before lining.

“Concealing the under-eye area is a must for creating a perfect canvas. Concealers should be painted on with a concealer or foundation brush. For an added boost, choose an illuminating formula that will hide circles and brighten the entire eye area in one.”

“We saw a lot of pewter tones and muted metallic shades this season. To create rich smokiness while still maintaining control, pat eye shadow on the lids—don’t swipe. Most people are used to applying in a windshield-wiper motion, but when you pat, you create depth without the mess.

“To get the look of naturally radiant skin at shows, we often apply makeup with our hands. Start with a foundation primer and then work it in with your fingers, after warming it first so that it spreads easily. If you’re going to use powder, apply it with a foundation brush so you can get more control and don’t overdo it.”
