MUSIC
Maiysha
This Much is True
Eusonia
Brooklyn-based songstress Maiysha’s soulful debut album mixes elements of jazz, funk, R&B and electronic music to create a refreshing sound. From the drum ‘n’ bass groove of “Over My Head” to the bluesy cover of Peter Gabriel’s classic 80’s hit “Sledgehammer,” her sultry voice takes listeners on a unique and spellbinding trip.
East Village Opera Company
Old School
Decca
Taking 300-year old operas and re-imagining them as modern day pop and rock hits may sound like quite an undertaking, but this band pulls the idea off with gusto. In commemorating their heroes on this album, East Village Opera Company has succeeded in creating something wholly enjoyable and unique.
DVDs
Son of Rambow
Paramount Home Entertainment
Rated: PG-13
After viewing a pirated copy of the initial Rambo film, two boys in the early ’80s are inspired to create their own tale about the spawn of Stallone’s character for a filmmaking competition. A buddy story at heart, it shines brightest when the main characters (who come from very different backgrounds) struggle to keep their project—and friendship—together. Creative and lighthearted (with a dash of dark comedy), it has a spirit that few movies this year have been able to muster.
GAMES
Order Up!
Zoo Digital Publications
Wii
Rated E
Order Up! is a deliciously fun take on cooking games that has you running your own kitchens, from greasy diners to posh French bistros. Using the Wiimote to chop, stir and fry everything from burgers to filet mignon, this comic ode to fine dining is chock-full of fun—no matter your culinary prowess.
Soul Calibur IV
Namco Bandai
Xbox 360/PlayStation 3
Rated T
This highly popular oneon-one fighting series’ debut on the latest generation of consoles takes full advantage of stunning graphics, fluid character animation, intuitive play and, best of all, online versus modes, a first for the franchise. Featuring more than 20 characters (including Star Wars favorites Darth Vader and Yoda, depending on which version you get) each with their own weapons and fighting styles, it’s the pinnacle of the fighting genre.
