With a brewers competition, gospel festival and environmental fair, among other festivities, the San Diego County Fair (www.sdfair.com) shows what the city is all about from June 14 to July 6 (closed Mondays). Of course, the Fourth is the big event, with performers including KC and the Sunshine Band plus a fireworks show.
This seaside town of Bristol, RI (64 miles from Boston) claims to have the oldest continuous Fourth of July Celebration ( www.july4thbristolri.com) of its kind, having started in 1785. With a drum and bugle competition, ball, pageant, parade and fireworks over Bristol Harbor, it’s a sweet and patriotic throwback. Check it out from June 14 to July 4.
Live music, a volleyball competition and rides are all at Houston’s all-American celebration at Chevy’s Freedom Over Texas (www.chevysfreedomovertexas. com) on July 4. Check out the NASCAR vehicles and the fireworks spectacular, the nation’s largest land-based pyrotechnics display.
