ROAD TRIPPERS

BY JIM GORZELANY

Looking to take the family out for a ride? If so, here are four of the latest vehicles— a sedan, station wagon, minivan and SUV—that can go the distance and help rejuvenate the clan after a long winter’s hibernation. The road beckons, and here are the cars that will make any journey (even your daily commute) more enjoyable:

Chrysler Town & Country • The redesigned minivan eschews a flashy exterior for kid friendliness. An available Swivel ’n Go seating system (covered in stain- and odor-resistant upholstery) lets the second-row seats turn and face the third row, with a folding table in the middle. The optional video entertainment system includes separate monitors that can play different media simultaneously, as well as Sirius Backseat TV, which streams kids programming to the vehicle. It’s powered by a choice of V-6 engines. MSRP: $22,510

Ford Taurus • The sedan formerly known as the Five Hundred gets spiced up with fresh exterior styling and added power this year. A new 3.5-liter V6 is about 30% stronger than last year’s version, registering a smooth and swift 263 hp. It delivers controlled cornering characteristics, with stability control and all-wheel drive available for added security over a wide range of conditions. The spacious interior generously fits five long-legged passengers. MSRP: $23,485

Toyota Highlander • Redesigned for 2008, this crossover SUV is larger and roomier than before. A second row seat functions as either a bench for maximum capacity or captain’s chairs to keep the kids separated by a removable center console. A third-row bench seat is also included. Seven airbags and an array of chassis-control systems are standard, with all-wheel drive and a rear backup camera available. A gas/electric hybrid model is also offered. MSRP: $27,300

Saab 9-3 SportCombi • If your getaway includes traversing twisty roads, the trip can strike a sporty chord in this restyled wagon. A peppy, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, with a quicker 255-hp, 2.8-liter turbo V6 included in the Aero version. Sport-tuned suspension and a stability control system ensure stellar handling qualities; all-wheel drive will be offered later in the model year. XM Satellite Radio and rain-sensing wipers are new standards. MSRP: $29,995
