TECH TALK

The latest high-tech automotive features are designed to make your journey both safer and more enjoyable.
Today’s autos are literally rolling test-beds of technology. All but the least-expensive models pack an array of advanced computer-controlled electronics, from systems that can keep the car at a set speed and distance from the traffic ahead to programs that can store digital music and movie files on an onboard hard-drive. (And these technologies are all becoming relatively commonplace.) So what’s next?
Here’s a look at six of the latest systems packed into four new or redesigned 2008 models that break ground in terms of safety and/or utility:
Lexus 600h L • This ultra-high-end hybrid sedan debuts a newly advanced Pre-Collision System, engineered to help a driver avoid hitting obstacles in the car’s path. Two video cameras monitor the road ahead, while another is focused on the driver’s face. If the system determines that the driver isn’t paying attention to the road—while also “seeing” an object or pedestrian in the car’s path—it will set off a flashing light and an audible alert. The system will also apply the brakes on its own as the car approaches the obstacle and will reprogram the steering for maximum quickness to help the driver steer clear of the obstacle. MSRP: $104,000
Cadillac CTS • Newest among the cutting-edge features on this redesigned sedan is a hard-drive entertainment system that both stores audio files and acts like an in-car DVR, automatically buffering radio broadcasts while the audio system is muted (like when you’re taking a cell-phone call). Also new is a Smart Remote Starter that not only activates the engine, but also turns on and adjusts the climate control system according to temperatures outside and inside the vehicle. MSRP: $33,490
Infiniti EX35 • The new Around View Monitor system on this sporty SUV uses four roof-mounted cameras so the driver has a peripheral view of the car’s exterior for easier parking. An available Lane Departure Prevention system not only gives visual and audible warnings if the car inadvertently crosses lane markers, it also “gently” engages the dynamic control system to get the auto back on track. Even better? The paint can “self-heal” fine scratches. MSRP: $34,850
Toyota Land Cruiser • A revamped 2008 version of this SUV includes a unique Crawl Control feature that operates like off-road cruise control. When low-range gearing is selected, the driver can choose from three crawl speeds. The system takes over to govern throttle and braking to maximize the car’s off-road abilities so the driver can focus on steering. It works well, but it takes a leap of faith to restrain yourself from hitting the brakes, which defeats the system. MSRP: $63,200
