While the actual holiday takes place February 5, experience the magic of the bright costumes and masks, purple and gold beads, and sugary King Cake early. Crescent City neighborhoods, including the French Quarter, host Mardi Gras parades for a couple of weeks leading up to the big day.

SOUTH BEACH COMEDY FESTIVAL
MIAMI
Funnywoman and “My Life on the D-List” star Kathy Griffin takes the stage during this four-day event. Andres Lopez (a Colombian sensation), Jeff Ross (“The Meanest Man in Comedy”) and many others will have audiences roaring with laughter. This year’s venues are the Lincoln Theatre, the Colony Theatre and the Jackie Gleason Theatre. A free stand-up stage will also be set up on Lincoln Road.

ARIZONA INDIAN FESTIVAL
Arizona is home to 22 federally recognized tribes and nations, and this three-day festival at Steele Indian School Park celebrates their unique heritage. Reconstructed villages will provide an authentic perspective to visitors, who will hear legendary stories from tribal elders, take in traditional dance and musical performances, and sample Native American cuisine.

Celebrate Dr. King’s birth and life in his hometown during King Week, Jan. 14-21. Sponsored by The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the event features live performances, special exhibits, inspirational concerts and educational seminars at venues around the city.
NEW YORK CITY
At the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, kids can learn about the life and principles of Dr. King by working together to create a large-scale quilt. In addition, the world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir is performing inspirational gospel music that will capture the attention of kids and adults alike.
HOUSTON
The MLK Grande Parade is the third largest parade in the US, after the Rose Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. More than 15 floats will attract a crowd of 500,000 spectators. The MLK Youth Parade is on Jan.19.
