RAISE A BROW

Use these tweezing tips to define the arch above your eyes.

Although it’s a seemingly minor beauty detail, the right brow shape can work wonders for your looks.

An artfully sculpted arch highlights your eyes, creates a more polished appearance and may even give your face a youthful lift. We consulted New York makeup artist and master brow guru Ramy—whose all-star client roster includes such starlets as Naomi Watts and Halle Berry—to get the inside secrets for tweezing the perfect arch. — Christina Kallery

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

You’ll need a large mirror, a good pair of tweezers, grooming scissors, a small brush and at least 20 minutes. “Rushing leads to the worst brow fiascoes,” Ramy says

STEP 1

• “Brush your eyebrows upward and trim them with scissors as conservatively as possible, as though you are trimming split ends.”

STEP 2

• “Where should your brow begin and end? Hold your brush or a pencil vertically against the side of your nose. The place where the pencil lands is where your brow should begin. Another good test is to stand one to two feet away from the mirror so that you don’t see every little hair and can look at your face objectively. Then move closer and begin shaping. Tweeze from underneath the brow, removing one row of hair from beginning of brow to end. Pluck hairs out in the direction of hair growth. If necessary, remove the second row of hair from directly underneath the arch, to open it up.”

STEP 3

• “Clean the hairs in what I call ‘no man’s land’—hairs that are not part of your eyebrow or your hairline, but exist somewhere in the middle. Lastly, pluck between the eyebrows.”

STEP 4
• “Using your brush, comb brows downward. Trim any excess length, cutting against the grain.”
