In the heart of Midtown’s arts and entertainment district, across the street from the historic Fox Theater, lies another noteworthy site: The Georgian Terrace Hotel. As one of Atlanta’s premier luxury hotels, this landmark provides guests with gorgeous rooms and countless amenities in which to indulge, along with all of the glamour tied to its rich history.
The hotel opened its doors in 1911 and was flooded with enthusiastic guests from day one. The original turreted corners, floor-to-floor Palladian-styled windows and wrap-around columned terraces still leave people in awe. The hotel was designed with white marble columns and elliptical staircases, and appointed with crystal chandeliers that infused an elegance unknown to the city at the time. It was instantly dubbed Atlanta’s “Grande Dame.”
In 1939, the hotel had its most legendary brush with fame when it hosted a reception for the world premiere of Gone With the Wind in the Grand Ballroom. With celebs like Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in attendance, the party was claimed to be one of the grandest the city had ever seen. However, in the early ’80s, the hotel was on the verge of being demolished.
Luckily for future visitors, it was salvaged. It is now included in the National Register of Historic Places and has been restored to the splendor of its heyday.
A 2001 renovation saw the hotel fully refurbished. In order to stay true to the original Parisian architecture, the intricate crown moldings, ceiling frescoes and marble floors were all returned carefully to their original conditions. However, the hotel went above and beyond when catering to future guests.
A health club can be found in a glass-enclosed penthouse, providing beautiful views of the city. The outdoor swimming pool is located on the roof, another great place to capture a panorama of the skyline. Each of the hotel suites boasts full kitchens and washer/dryers, providing guests full comfort while preparing for a big night out.
On the ground level of the hotel, business travelers will find the spacious meeting rooms and two ballrooms, which can accommodate up to 200 people. The hotel’s conference center is one of the city’s newest and most prestigious places to gather for a meeting. Even better, use the ballroom to stage your own legendary party for future generations to envy. —Alexandra P. Karplus
