Automakers are creating a wave of new models aimed at youthful buyers.
Virtually all automakers are in pursuit of younger buyers these days. Even brands like Buick and Cadillac, known for commanding a middleaged following, are eager to attract a more youthful demographic. The basic formula to achieve this goal remains the same, however: Sell smaller, lessexpensive, fashion-forward models that remain fairly entertaining to drive. Here’s a look at the latest in lowcost, high-excitement models that make a vehicular style statement. And remember, as playwright George Bernard Shaw famously said, “Youth is wasted on the young,” so be sure to enjoy the ride at any age.

Jeep Patriot
Wrapped in upright military styling, this compact crossover SUV boasts a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter engine, with an available Continuously Variable Transaxle transmission that combines automatic convenience with stick-shift performance and fuel economy. An available Freedom Drive II Off-Road package includes a rugged “Trail Rated” four-wheel drive system, enabling the car to outperform most crossovers in the dirt. MSRP: $14,425
Volvo C30
The C30 is a new sporty compact hatchback based on the S40 sedan and V50 wagon. The C30’s stylish interior transports four adults in separate bucket-style seats in the back. Dodge Avenger
This all-new sedan comes wrapped in muscular exterior styling and includes a sport-tuned suspension for tenacious cornering abilities. Optional stability control and all-wheel-drive systems deliver exceptional traction on wet or dry roads. Three engine choices include a 235-horsepower V6, and both four- and five-speed automatic transmissions are available. Scion xD
A distinctive-looking four-door subcompact, Scion’s new hatchback benefits from a relatively strong 128-horsepower, four-cylinder engine. Riding on a short, wide frame and 16-inch wheels, the xD delivers entertaining handling, while antilock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist provide secure stopping power.
