HAIR CARE 101

Maintain your beautiful mane with these tips from one of New York’s finest hairstylists.

What’s sexier than carefree, tousled locks shining in the sun? Not a whole lot, which is why we set out to find the best ways to keep hair looking gorgeous all summer long. Superstar stylist Antonio Prieto of New York’s renowned Antonio Prieto Salon surrendered some of his hottest secrets for getting beautiful, healthy-looking hair, combating summer’s worst offenders—and doing damage control in a pinch.

Preserve and Protect
Sun and chlorine can fade color and dry out locks. To ward off damage, look for products with UV filters. “Make sure to apply before and after you take a dip,” Prieto advises. “Using a color shampoo and conditioner will help keep color fresh. And don’t forget to show off your fabulous summer hats!” Bonus tips: After shampooing, let hair air dry. If you simply must use a blow dryer, wait until your hair is 90% dry first, and then apply a thermal protecting oil that’s not too heavy.

Keep it Healthy
“Keep hair trimmed regularly,” Prieto says, echoing the oft-recited mantra of hair stylists everywhere. It will look healthier and be easier to style in humid weather. To zap chlorine buildup on non-color-treated hair, use a clarifying shampoo, plus a twice-perweek deep conditioning mask. “A great tip is to use the mask while you’re in the sun,” Prieto says. The heat will allow ingredients to penetrate better. A reminder for colortreated types: Always use conditioning products with UV filters.

Fake it ’Til You Make it
Don’t have time for a pre-party trim or deep conditioning mask? Prieto says to “go for the shimmery wet look by using a moisturizing cream that will reflect light and impart lots of shine.” To smooth split ends and give the illusion of healthier hair, spritz on a spray shine product. One caveat: Don’t overdo it—too much can weigh hair down and leave it looking dirty. —Christina Kallery
