Spring runways showcased a plethora of artful beauty ideas, from girly to glam. Here’s how to make three of them your own:
Prettier in Pink
Sweet, ultra feminine and too-sexy-to-besaccharine pink makeup made a major showing on spring catwalks. The appeal? Done right, this hue flatters almost everyone. “The majority of softer shades look good on most women,” says Francis Roman, makeup artist extraordinaire at NYC’s Butterfly Studio.
- Eyes: Choose soft, shimmery hues for lids and leave the trendy, hot pink shades to magazine spreads. “In real life, they make women look tired or like they’ve been crying,” observes Roman.
- Cheeks: “Women underestimate the power of a little pink blush,” Roman says. “A soft, natural-looking hue will pick up your complexion and add color to your face.”
- Lips: For lips, nothing’s prettier than a babydoll pink shade and sheer pink gloss. “This look is especially hot with smoky eyes,” adds Roman.
Sparkling Eyes
Not just for showgirls and pop stars anymore, glittery, metallic eyes reigned on runways. In the real world, a light touch is the way to go. “Nothing too glittery is best,” says Roman. “Choose a translucent glitter or shimmer and apply just to the upper lids—not the entire eye—or place a tiny bit on the cheek bone.”
With a little self-restraint, anyone can make use of this look for a day. “It depends on your style. There are no rules—except don’t overdo it,” she says.
Defying conventional makeup wisdom, Roman says older women can still indulge in some beauty bling: “Instead of glitter, try something with a little sparkle instead.”
In the Nude
Designers like Balenciaga complemented their collections with bare-looking, dewy faces. According to Ramy Gafni, makeup artist and creator of Ramy cosmetics, going bare is all about perfecting the canvas.
“For super nude makeup, your skin should look as even and flawless as possible. Dot on concealer and blend to disguise imperfections and ditch foundation if you don’t need it. Next, sweep a tawny colored blush onto cheeks, along hairline and over eyelids for an overall glow. Add a neutral eyeliner and black mascara to upper lash line only. Finish off with a neutral lip.”
