WHILE the sky’s the limit with regard to what you can pay for the costliest luxury cars, you don’t have to be one of the world’s wealthiest individuals to ride in style. Automakers are courting modestly upscale buyers with an array of “near luxury” sedans. They provide added comfort, performance and features over the typical midsize models, with an element of exclusivity that’s a cut above the norm.
Here’s a look at some of the latest in affordable, yet accommodating luxury sedans:
Hyundai Azera
The words “Hyundai” and “luxury” were once rarely used in the same breath, but the automaker’s top-of-the-line Azera is poised to take on the likes of Lexus and Lincoln… for less money. Sporting a handsome profile, the Azera’s 3.8-liter V6 engine uses variable valve timing to generate 263 horsepower; a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode is standard. A long list of amenities are included, though the Azera eschews many high-tech features for simplicity’s sake.

Lexus ES 350
Lexus’ update on the ES sedan has a stylish new look and a new name—the ES 350—by virtue of its larger and stronger
3.5-liter 275-horsepower V6 engine. A new six-speed automatic transmission adapts its shift patterns to a motorist’s driving style and includes a manual gear-selection mode. The car rides on a longer wheelbase and a slightly wider track than before, and includes eight airbags. The system comes with a laser-guided cruise control that can maintain both a set speed and safe distance from the traffic ahead.

Infiniti G35
The G35 sedan is upgraded with fresh styling and a revised 3.5-liter V6 engine which now produces 306 horsepower. The G35x version’s all-wheel-drive system adjusts the amount of power sent to the front and rear wheels, even while cornering. Vehicle Dynamic Control is standard for added security. RearView video monitor is available to make parking easier and safer.

Lincoln MKZ
Lincoln’s midsize Zephyr is renamed the MKZ for 2007 and includes a new 250-hp 3.5-liter V6 powerplant that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A new “intelligent” all-wheel-drive maximizes both the car’s foul-weather tractability and dry-pavement handling, sending power front-to-rear and side-to-side as needed. The MKZ’s sophisticated suspension provides a reasonable balance of ride quality and handling prowess. A relatively short list of options includes a 600-watt THX-II-certified surround-sound audio array that boasts two separate subwoofers.
