Targeted Art
Exhibition, Jan 28-April 29
Jasper Johns—one of finest living painters in America—is the subject of this exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Jasper Johns: An Allegory of Painting, 1955-1965 presents some of the artist’s most iconic paintings and prints in the decade following his destruction in 1954 of all his existing work to that point. Four specific motifs in John’s work—the target, the “device,” the stenciled naming of colors and the imprint of the body— are examined in chronological groups along with their significance to following generations of artists.
