The true kings of the highway blend practicality with luxury.

DESPITE slowing sales, there will always be a need for full-size pickup trucks and SUVs because of their sheer power and utility. Size does matter when you’re trying to tow a big boat or trailer or pull a tree stump from the earth, and the best of this breed can likewise coddle its passengers in complete comfort.
Here’s a look at some of the latest—and largest— rides on the road:
Lincoln Navigator
The large and luxurious Lincoln Navigator SUV has been redesigned, and the vehicle line adds an extended-length eight-passenger model, the Navigator L. It rides on a new chassis with revised suspension, steering and braking systems. A 300-hp 5.4-liter V8 engine and six-speed automatic gearbox afford ample acceleration. With a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, its maximum tow rating is now 9,100 pounds. Ford’s AdvanceTrak stability control system with Roll Stability Control and front-side and safety canopy airbags are included for safety’s sake. MSRP: $45,755 www.lincoln.com
Chevrolet Avalanche
Available with either rear-or four-wheel drive, the redesigned Avalanche rides on a stronger chassis than before and is powered by a 310-hp 5.3-liter V8 engine (an all-aluminum 355-hp 6.0-liter V8 is also offered). With its innovative Convert-a-Cab system, the rear seat folds flat, the back window and bed cover stow, and a midgate behind the rear seat lowers to create a standard eight-foot bed. With the midgate in place, the Avalanche becomes a six-passenger SUV with a five-foot cargo bed, or a large enclosed trunk with the hardtop cover in place.
MSRP: $32,690 www.chevrolet.com
Toyota Tundra
Bigger than the version it replaces, the recast Tundra offers an expanded range of powertrains including a 4.0-liter V6, and a choice of 4.7-liter and 5.7-liter V8s. The latter comes mated to a new heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. Available in rear-drive and 4X4 versions, the Tundra boasts a top towing capacity over 10,000 pounds. Three cab configurations are offered, with roomy interiors and a long list of available features. MSRP: $19,000 (est) www.toyota.com
Chrysler Aspen
Chrysler debuts its first large luxury SUV for 2007, which shares components with the Dodge Durango, though it carries distinctive styling cues, including a large chrome grille up front and a sculpted hood. Buyers with a thing for bling can further dress up the exterior with bold 20-inch chrome wheels. The Aspen offers a choice of a 235-hp 4.7-liter V8 engine or a 335-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8, and each comes mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. Two 4WD systems are offered in addition to rear-drive versions. Three rows of seats and side-curtain airbags are included, along with a long list of standard and optional amenities. MSRP: $31,490 www.chrysler.com
